From “Do Not Be Like a Willow” to the Fall of the Republic: How Did Ashraf Ghani’s Promises Collapse Against the Reality of August 15, 2021?
Mohammad Ashraf Ghani, the former president of Afghanistan, repeatedly emphasized the strength of the government, the defense of the republic, and resistance to political pressure before the fall of the republic. In one of his speeches, he said: “Please, do not be like a willow that trembles with every wind.”
But a few months later, on August 15, 2021, the Taliban entered Kabul, and the government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan collapsed within a short period. Ghani also left Afghanistan that same day, while the Taliban took control of the presidential palace and the capital.
The event is considered one of the most controversial and painful chapters in Afghanistan’s contemporary history, as a system that had been established and strengthened over years with extensive financial, political, and military support from the international community rapidly disintegrated in the face of the Taliban’s advance. Reports indicate that in the final days, large numbers of Afghan security forces abandoned their positions without effective resistance, while provincial capitals fell one after another.
Critics of the Ashraf Ghani government say there was a deep gap between his statements about resistance, defending the republic, and preventing the collapse of the government, and what happened on August 15. The president’s sudden departure at the most critical moment created a major political and psychological vacuum and accelerated the collapse of the government’s structure. Reports published at the time also described widespread shock and confusion among government officials and the public.
However, responsibility for the fall of Afghanistan cannot be attributed to a single individual. The Doha Agreement, the decision by the United States and its allies to withdraw their forces, structural weaknesses within the government, political leadership problems, corruption, internal divisions, and the collapse of morale among security forces all played a role in creating the conditions that ultimately led to the fall of Kabul.
Years later, the fundamental question remains: If the leadership of the republic continued to emphasize resistance and defending the system until the final moment, why did the capital fall at the most critical moment in the country’s history without an orderly transfer of power and without effective defense?
The fall of August 15 was not merely the defeat of a government; it marked the end of Afghanistan’s republican system and the beginning of a new chapter in the country’s political history—a chapter whose consequences continue to cast a shadow over the lives of millions of Afghans.
