Suzana Fioretti, founder of the Italian aid organization NOVE Caring Humans, has said that daughters of some Taliban members also attended a secret school in Kabul. The school was established after the Taliban returned to power in 2021 to allow girls to continue their education.

In an interview with the Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera, Fioretti said classes were held in a room that also contained sewing machines. According to her, the organizers hid books and educational materials in case of a possible inspection, making the location appear to be a sewing workshop.

She added that after about two years, they discovered that daughters of some Taliban members were also among the students, and that their parents wanted them to continue their education despite the restrictions. Fioretti said that some people linked to the Taliban also privately oppose restrictions they consider wrong.

However, this account is based on Fioretti’s statements, and the presence of these girls at the school has not been independently verified.

Millions of Girls Deprived of Education

According to a UNICEF announcement in August 2026, more than 2.6 million girls in Afghanistan have been deprived of secondary education since 2021. Afghanistan remains the only country in the world where girls and women are barred from secondary and higher education.

Fioretti’s account of the secret school is an example of efforts that, according to her, have been made to continue girls’ education under restrictions.
