U.S. President Donald Trump has said that the United States may assume control of the Strait of Hormuz and charge countries that benefit from its security for protecting the strategic waterway.
Speaking in an interview with Fox News, Trump said: “We will protect the Strait of Hormuz, and we will probably take control of it. We will be the guardian of the Strait. Maybe we’ll call it the Guardian Angel. We should be reimbursed for doing that.”
He added that the United States has played a key role in safeguarding this vital maritime route for years and that the time has come for countries benefiting from its security to contribute financially.
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most important oil transit routes, and any change in its security or management could have significant implications for global energy markets and international trade. Trump’s remarks come amid ongoing tensions between the United States and Iran over the strategic waterway.
