The Women’s Movement Network has strongly condemned the recent wave of arrests of women protesters in Kabul, stating in a resolution that the suppression, intimidation, and silencing of women in Afghanistan have become a routine and systematic practice.
In its resolution, the network claimed that a pregnant woman is among those detained and described her situation as concerning. The Women’s Movement Network said that the detention of a pregnant woman, regardless of the claims made by Taliban officials, requires immediate attention and guarantees for her health and safety as well as that of her unborn child.
The resolution states that the normalization of women’s detention and its transformation into a daily news event has created serious concern in Afghan society. The network stressed that remaining silent in the face of the detention and suppression of women could provide grounds for the continuation and expansion of this trend.
The Women’s Movement Network called on the people of Afghanistan not to remain silent in the face of the detention, torture, threats, enforced disappearances, and suppression of women. It also called on the United Nations, human rights organizations, and the international community to independently investigate the recent detention of women in Kabul and take action to secure the release of those detained.
The network also called for an immediate follow-up on the situation of the detained pregnant woman and for guarantees regarding her health and safety and that of her unborn child.
In another section of the resolution, the Women’s Movement Network called on the international community to take a clear and practical position against what it described as a “systematic policy of eliminating women from Afghan society” and not allow the suppression of women to become an ordinary and daily issue.
The Women’s Movement Network concluded by emphasizing that Afghan women should not be treated as criminals for demanding freedom, education, employment, and the right to choose, and called for an end to the suppression of women.
