Hassan Khodai, a 21-year-old man, was shot dead early on Friday, 23 October, in the Kian area of Khadir district, Daikundi province. The identity of the person or people responsible and the motive for the killing remain unknown.

According to information released about the incident, Hassan was at a shop near his home, where he also slept at night. At around 3:20 to 3:30 a.m., someone arrived at the location, after which shots were fired at Hassan. A bullet struck him in the upper chest, near his neck. After being wounded, Hassan contacted his mother, but he died from his injuries after family members arrived.

Hassan had previously returned to Afghanistan from Iran. However, the information released about the incident gives differing accounts of when he returned.

Some media outlets have reported that Hassan’s brother served in the security forces of Afghanistan’s former government and now lives in the United States. However, any connection between this information and Hassan’s killing remains unclear.

It has also been alleged that local Taliban officials initially refused to allow the body to be buried and asked the family to declare his death a suicide. This allegation has not been independently verified. Hassan was reportedly buried the following day.

At the time of publication, the Taliban had not issued an official statement about the incident, and no information was available about the identification or arrest of the person or people responsible for the killing.
