On Tuesday, September 22, a number of women were detained by Taliban forces and officials from the Ministry for the Propagation of Virtue and Prevention of Vice on Shah-Do Shamshira Road in Kabul.
According to eyewitnesses, more than 20 women who were wearing full hijab at the location were detained by Taliban forces. A video of the detentions has also been circulated on social media, showing morality officials forcibly putting women and girls into vehicles. The release of the video has prompted widespread reactions on social media.
One of the detained women, who is a member of an Afghan civil society and human rights organization, said the moment of the detention was accompanied by fear and shock. According to her, the women had been going about their daily activities until they were suddenly surrounded by Taliban officials and transferred into vehicles.
The woman added that the mobile phones of all the detained women were searched. Some were released after no material deemed contrary to the Taliban was found on their phones, following guarantees provided by their families. However, around 16 women reportedly remain in detention and are said to be transferred from the Second Police District to a Taliban security agency in Kabul province.
According to the source, the video shows some of the women resisting the Taliban forces during their detention and expressing opposition to their arrest. She said Taliban officials told them they would be transferred to the “Chehel Sotoun Directorate.”
