Local sources say that after retaking Yaftal-e-Payin district in Badakhshan, the Taliban have begun widespread arrests of local residents in response to their initial defeat.
According to sources, Taliban forces have been conducting searches in streets, alleys and people’s homes, arresting a number of teenagers and local residents. Sources claim that the Taliban are labelling those arrested as “rebels” without providing clear evidence and based on suspicion and speculation.
Local sources say that the arrests appear to be primarily motivated by revenge against the local population, and that the individuals detained do not necessarily have any connection to an armed group or opposition forces.
The Taliban have released a video claiming that those arrested are members of the “National Resistance Forces.” However, local residents say that the individuals shown in the video are ordinary teenagers and residents of Yaftal and are not members of any military group.
According to sources, the Taliban are not following a clear legal process during these arrests and are detaining people solely on the basis of allegations and speculation. The Taliban have not yet officially commented on the identities of those detained or the reasons for their arrests.
