The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA), in its latest report, stated that the Taliban authorities have restricted freedom of religion by closing at least 33 Ismaili Jamatkhanas in Badakhshan Province and imposing restrictions on the religious ceremonies of Shia Muslims.
According to the report, the Taliban’s Ministry for the Propagation of Virtue and the Prevention of Vice, in coordination with several other institutions, has been closing Ismaili Jamatkhanas in Badakhshan since January 2026. Followers of the Ismaili faith were reportedly instructed not to use these places of worship for religious activities.
UNAMA also reported that a number of Shia citizens were detained by the Taliban after holding Ashura commemorations. The mission said these measures form part of broader restrictions imposed on freedom of religion and the practice of religious rites in Afghanistan.
