The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) has said that at least 42 children between the ages of 9 and 14 were injured in Monday evening’s explosion, August 17, at an educational center in Kabul’s Dasht-e Barchi area.
On Tuesday, August 18, UNAMA issued a statement expressing sympathy with the injured children and their families and called for an investigation to determine how the incident occurred.
The UN mission emphasized that schools and educational centers must be protected from all forms of violence and that children should be able to continue their education in a safe environment.
Meanwhile, Taliban spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid had earlier said that the explosion may have been carried out by ISIS or “groups affiliated with it.” He added that an investigation into the incident was underway and that Taliban security forces were working to identify and arrest those responsible.
Dasht-e Barchi, in western Kabul, has repeatedly been the site of deadly attacks targeting civilians and educational institutions in recent years.
