Zabihullah Mujahid, the Taliban’s spokesperson, welcomed the Islamic Republic of Iran’s position of not supporting political and military groups opposed to the Taliban, describing it as being in line with the wishes of the Afghan people.
The reaction came after Seyed Hassan Mortazavi, Iran’s deputy ambassador in Kabul, stated that Tehran does not support any political or military groups opposing the Taliban and does not consider armed conflict against the group to be “resistance.”
Referring to Iran’s position on Monday, Mujahid said: “The Iranian Embassy adopted a very clear position and proved that Iran’s position is the position of the Afghan people.” He described the stance as “commendable.”
The Taliban spokesperson also stressed that no one wants war to continue in Afghanistan and said that any individual or group that, under any name, engages in unrest and fuels insecurity should be condemned.
These remarks come as anti-Taliban forces briefly took control of the center of Yaftal-e Payin district in Badakhshan province in recent days. The Taliban later announced that it had regained full control of the district after deploying reinforcements.
