Local sources in Badakhshan say that a large Taliban convoy, consisting of around 50 military and transport vehicles, including Humvees, has moved toward Shighnan district. The sources stated that the convoy departed from Baharak district early this morning and is expected to proceed to Nusay district after reaching Shighnan. They added that only five of the vehicles in the convoy belonged to Taliban forces stationed in Badakhshan. Sources also reported that Mawlawi Mahboob Hamid, the Taliban’s deputy governor in Ghor province, had been asked to participate in the operation but declined to do so. According to the sources, he has not attended his official duties in Ghor since Eid al-Adha. In recent weeks, reports have emerged of growing tensions between Juma Khan Fateh, a prominent Taliban commander from Badakhshan, and circles affiliated with the group’s Kandahar-based leadership.
