Habib-ur-Rahman Hekmatyar, son of Gulbuddin Hekmatyar, the leader of Afghanistan’s Hezb-e-Islami, reacted to the recent security developments in Badakhshan Province by holding the Taliban responsible for the potential consequences of escalating insecurity in the country.
In a statement, he said that the Taliban have rejected inclusive political solutions by dismantling national institutions and continuing their monopoly on power. He added that if the security situation deteriorates further, the primary responsibility for its consequences will rest with the Taliban.
Hekmatyar stressed that no Afghan citizen desires insecurity. However, he argued that if the Taliban consider armed conflict to have been a legitimate means of attaining power, then other political groups also have the right to pursue the same path in order to play a role in the country’s future and achieve their political rights, and they should not be deprived of that right.
He further warned that the incidents witnessed in Badakhshan in recent days could spread to other provinces, potentially leaving the Taliban facing guerrilla attacks, the loss of checkpoints, and disruptions to their supply routes.
