Roula Ghani, the wife of former Afghan President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani, spoke in an interview with the French section of the ARTE network about her final hours in Kabul and the decision to leave Afghanistan on August 15, 2021.
Roula Ghani said that on that day, Kabul and the Presidential Palace were filled with “fear and chaos,” and she was told that she had to leave the area as soon as possible.
She added that she did not want to leave Afghanistan and told her husband: “I really did not want to leave the country. I told my husband, why should I go? I will stay with you.”
These remarks come as August 15, 2021, marked one of the most significant political and security events in Afghanistan’s contemporary history, with the Taliban entering Kabul and Mohammad Ashraf Ghani leaving Afghanistan.
In the interview, Roula Ghani also spoke about the situation in Kabul that day and the decisions made during the final hours of the former Afghan government.
