The Afghanistan Media Support Organization in Exile (Nai) says that in Afghanistan there is no specific law regulating media activities based on the values of freedom of expression and defining the legal framework for their work.
The organization stated on Wednesday, 21 Asad, that the Taliban have issued more than 25 direct and nationwide decrees, as well as dozens of local and indirect ones, to restrict media activities.
According to Nai, these orders are in practice enforced as Taliban laws against the media—an issue that, in the organization’s view, has left the legal status of the media and media institutions in Afghanistan unclear.
Nai added that the absence of a clear legal framework has made the media and journalists more vulnerable to various orders and imposed restrictions, and has limited the scope for free media activity.
The organization has called for the establishment of a clear legal framework for media activities and the guarantee of freedom of expression in Afghanistan.
