A video of a Hindu pilgrim in India has been shared on social media, showing him traveling about five kilometers by rolling on the ground to reach the Kamadgiri Temple in Chitrakoot, Madhya Pradesh.
According to published reports, this form of pilgrimage is known as Shayana Pradakshinam and is performed in some Hindu religious traditions as a form of fulfilling a vow and expressing religious devotion.
In this ritual, instead of walking normally, the pilgrim lies on the ground and travels along the pilgrimage route through repeated rolls. In the video, several companions can also be seen accompanying the man and, in some parts of the route, placing mats or mattresses underneath him to protect his body.
Reports say that the route around the sacred Kamadgiri Hill in Chitrakoot is about five kilometers long and is considered an important Hindu pilgrimage route.
This practice differs from the repeated prostrations known as Sashtanga Namaskaram, as in Shayana Pradakshinam, the pilgrim’s primary movement is performed by lying down and rolling along the ground.
