Moscow — Russian officials said on Sunday, September 20, that Moscow and surrounding areas had been targeted in one of the largest Ukrainian drone attacks.
Sergei Sobyanin, the mayor of Moscow, said that more than 1,600 drones had been intercepted or shot down while heading toward Moscow since Saturday, with around 450 of them directly heading toward the Russian capital. He described the attack as the largest drone attack against Moscow.
Following the attacks, the Moscow Oil Refinery in the Kapotnya district was also targeted, with reports indicating that a fire broke out and smoke was seen rising from the facility. The refinery is considered one of Russia’s major oil facilities and processes approximately 11 million tonnes of crude oil annually.
Russian officials also reported that at least two people had been killed and several others injured in areas around Moscow.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed that Ukrainian forces had targeted a major facility of Russia’s oil industry in the Moscow region during overnight attacks.
However, the exact number of drones used and the extent of damage to the refinery and other facilities have not been independently verified.
