The Lahore High Court on Friday, September 11, temporarily suspended the implementation of a decision by the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) to expel Afghan medical and dental students from educational institutions in Pakistan.
The judge hearing the case emphasized that Afghan students should be given an opportunity to complete their studies.
The decision came after 13 Afghan students filed a petition with the Lahore High Court on Thursday, September 10, challenging the PMDC directive. They said they had been removed from their educational institutions under the council’s order.
The PMDC had previously instructed medical and dental institutions to stop admitting new Afghan students and to expel Afghan students currently enrolled and return them to Afghanistan.
Reports by Pakistani media indicate that the decision put a significant number of Afghan students, including some nearing completion of their studies, at risk of having their education disrupted and their professional futures affected.
