A charter flight carrying 40 Afghan nationals who had been convicted of various crimes in Germany landed in Kabul on Wednesday, 28 October. The flight departed from Leipzig Airport in Germany. According to published reports, most of the deportees were transferred directly from prison to the airport.
According to the information released, the individuals had been convicted in Germany of crimes including sexual offences, violent crimes and drug trafficking. Reports say some of them had served their sentences in German prisons before being deported.
Alexander Dobrindt, Germany’s interior minister, told the German newspaper Bild that people who commit crimes must leave the country. He described the return of Afghan nationals as part of the German government’s migration policy and stressed the enforcement of the country’s legal decisions.
This was the fifth deportation flight carrying Afghan nationals from Germany in recent months. On previous flights, 13 Afghan nationals were returned in mid-September, 30 on 16 June, 31 on 28 July and 23 men on 24 August.
With the latest flight, the total number of people returned on these five flights reaches 137. This figure represents only the combined number of people on the flights mentioned and does not reflect the overall number of Afghan nationals deported from Germany.
Bild also reported that German officials had reached an agreement with representatives of the Taliban administration to arrange regular deportation flights for Afghan nationals.
The process continues as Afghanistan faces economic difficulties, a shortage of job opportunities and extensive humanitarian needs. However, no specific information has been published about the individual or family circumstances of the 40 Afghan nationals following their arrival in Kabul.
The policy has also drawn reactions in Germany. On Sunday, hundreds of people protested at several airports across the country against the deportation of migrants and their detention before being transferred to their countries of origin.
