Hamid Karzai, former president of Afghanistan, had previously made remarks about the establishment of the Taliban’s political office in Doha, the capital of Qatar, saying that the Afghan government had not agreed with the establishment of the office from the outset and had doubts about its true purpose.
Karzai said the Afghan government was concerned that the Qatar office might not have been established solely to advance peace negotiations and that there could be another objective behind it.
For him, it does not matter whether the future system is called the “Islamic Republic of Afghanistan” or the “Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan”; what matters is that Afghanistan remains a united country.
In 2013, following the opening of the Taliban’s political office in Doha and the use of the title “Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan” during the opening ceremony, Hamid Karzai’s government objected to the move. Qatar later announced that the office was the “Political Office of the Afghan Taliban,” rather than the political office of the “Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan.”
Karzai also emphasized at the time that the peace process should be Afghan-led and later said that he would have preferred the Taliban’s office to be established inside Afghanistan rather than in Qatar.
