The German newspaper taz has reported that, alongside the deportation of Afghan nationals with criminal records, the German government is also considering deporting a number of Afghan migrants who have neither criminal convictions nor pose any security threat.
According to the report, citing refugee councils in several German states, at least five Afghan nationals without criminal convictions are currently being held in special deportation detention facilities—four in the state of Bavaria and one in Hesse. The report also states that an Afghan national who had been detained in Lower Saxony was released after Germany’s Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF) acknowledged an administrative error.
The report adds that after suspending deportations to Afghanistan for several years, Germany resumed the practice in 2024, initially targeting individuals with criminal records or those considered security threats. However, the country’s current coalition government is now examining whether to expand the policy to include Afghan migrants with no criminal record. The German Interior Ministry has not yet released official details about the plan or the number of people who could be affected.
