Thailand – International media have reported that a lightning strike during a football match in southern Thailand killed one player and injured 12 others.
The incident occurred on Tuesday, August 4, at Santipap Stadium in Sungai Kolok during the semi-final of the Golok FA Cup. According to reports, Sufwan Awai, a 24-year-old player for Yala FC who had recently joined the club, was struck directly by lightning and critically injured.
His teammates and emergency responders attempted to resuscitate him before rushing him to the hospital, but doctors later confirmed that he died from the severity of his injuries.
Thai police said that 12 other players, including one Malaysian player, were also injured and taken to medical facilities for treatment.
The incident happened amid heavy monsoon rain and a thunderstorm. Videos shared on social media show the moment the lightning struck the pitch, causing several players to collapse.
Yala FC issued a statement expressing condolences over the player’s death and extended sympathy to his family and loved ones.
