Atta Mohammad Noor, the former governor of Balkh, has described recent remarks by Amir Khan Muttaqi, the Taliban’s foreign minister, as “absurd” and a sign of the “moral decline and deterioration” within the Taliban administration.
In a post, Noor said that the large size and fat bellies of some Taliban officials were the result of the effects of “dal and dod-pati” from Pakistani madrassas. He also referred to the Taliban leaders as the “wayward sons” of Nasrullah Babar, Benazir Bhutto, and Pervez Musharraf, former Pakistani officials.
The Taliban’s foreign minister, speaking on the occasion of August 19, Afghanistan’s Independence Day, had said that Mullah Omar, the founder of the Taliban, was wounded four times but “swept the opponents all the way to Kulob.” Muttaqi also claimed that Taliban opponents had failed to establish a foothold in Afghanistan over the past five years.
In response to these remarks, Atta Mohammad Noor wrote that he had previously thought Amir Khan Muttaqi was “somewhat more polite, worldly-wise, and enlightened” among Taliban members; however, according to Noor, Muttaqi has also behaved like other members of the group.
In another part of his statement, Noor described the Taliban leaders as products of Pakistani madrassas and military centers and claimed that the families of some Taliban officials still live in Pakistani cities, while some leaders of the group are engaged in business in Pakistan.
He also criticized the Taliban’s treatment of the body of Hasib Panjshiri, a commander of the resistance front, and described it as contrary to Islamic teachings.
These remarks come amid deep differences in views between Atta Mohammad Noor and the Taliban, particularly regarding the group’s background, conduct, and relations with Pakistan.
