The Valais Cantonal Court in Switzerland has rejected the appeal of an Afghan man who had been convicted of attempting to kill his wife, upholding the sentence of 10 years in prison and a 15-year ban on entering Switzerland.
According to Swiss media and the Keystone-SDA news agency, the man knocked his wife to the ground on November 21, 2022, and then struck her several times on the head and body with a branch approximately 80 centimeters long.
As a result of the attack, the woman sustained injuries to her head, cervical vertebrae, eye socket, and maxillary sinus.
During the trial, the defendant said that he had “behaved stupidly” during the attack and suggested that alcohol consumption may have influenced his behavior.
The defendant’s lawyer had requested that he be convicted of the lesser offense of simple bodily injury. However, the court rejected the request and upheld the previous sentence. Under the court’s ruling, after serving his prison sentence, the man will be banned from entering Switzerland for 15 years.
