I am an elderly Afghan mother. You speak about jihad and the struggle of men, but have you forgotten that behind many of those same men whose jihad you speak of, there was a mother, a wife, a sister, or a daughter?
Men may have been on the battlefield, but women built the trenches at home; they raised children, held families together, endured hunger and fear, and in the absence of men, carried the heavy burden of life on their shoulders.
If a man went to the battlefield to defend his beliefs and homeland, did the mother who raised him and the wife who took care of the family in his absence have no role?
Do not define jihad and struggle only through guns and presence on the battlefield. There were women who stood alongside the men of this country through patience, sacrifice, raising children, and enduring years of suffering.
So do not belittle the women of Afghanistan. If you speak of the sacrifices of men, also remember the mothers who raised those men, and do not forget the women who remained beside their families during the most difficult days.
These are the words of an elderly mother: The history of Afghanistan is not only the story of men who were on the battlefield; it is also the story of mothers who, behind those battlefields, kept generations alive.
