Today, June 20, marks World Refugee Day – a day observed each year to draw attention to the situation of millions of refugees, displaced persons, and stateless individuals around the world.
This day comes as Afghan citizens are living in exile across several countries. Crises stemming from war, insecurity, human rights violations, and economic hardships have forced millions of people to flee their homes. Afghan citizens are among the largest refugee populations in the world, many of whom face serious challenges in neighboring countries and other parts of the globe – including forced deportation, residency issues, and limited access to basic services.
On this day, human rights activists and international organizations emphasize the need to protect refugees, uphold their human rights, and find sustainable solutions to end the displacement crisis.
