The protest of residents in the Jebrail area of Herat against the Taliban’s detention of women and girls was met with a crackdown by the group’s forces.

Videos circulating on social media show Taliban forces opening fire to disperse the demonstrators and physically assaulting a number of participants.

The protests were held following widespread reports of women being detained in Herat for allegedly failing to comply with the Taliban’s interpretation of the hijab. In recent days, international organizations and media outlets have also expressed concern over the arrests of women in the province.

So far, the Taliban have not officially commented on the suppression of the protest or on the possible number of people injured or detained during the incident.
