Russian authorities have announced the arrest of a journalist working for the Japanese newspaper Hokkaido Shimbun on espionage charges on Sakhalin Island in Russia’s Far East. According to Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB), the journalist was arrested while preparing to leave Russia and was subsequently transferred to Moscow.
The FSB has alleged that the journalist was collecting and storing information about Russia’s defence capabilities on the instructions of a Japanese intelligence agency. The agency said the information could be used against Russia’s national security. However, these allegations have not been independently verified.
Russia’s Foreign Ministry identified the journalist as Yuki Imai. The newspaper Hokkaido Shimbun also said its journalist had been working in Russia on a journalist visa and that it was investigating the details of the incident. The newspaper said ensuring the journalist’s safety was its priority.
According to the Associated Press, the Lefortovo District Court in Moscow ordered that the journalist remain in detention for nearly two months while the investigation continues.
In response to the arrest, the Japanese government called on Russian authorities to provide clear information about the journalist’s situation and facilitate contact between Japanese officials and the detainee. Japan’s Foreign Ministry also summoned the Russian ambassador and called for the arrested journalist to be treated fairly and humanely.
The incident comes amid tensions in relations between Russia and Japan over the war in Ukraine, Tokyo’s participation in Western sanctions against Moscow, and a longstanding dispute over the Kuril Islands. The islands are administered by Russia, but Japan also claims sovereignty over part of the territory.
