Following the meeting of the Council of Heads of State of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) in Bishkek, the capital of Kyrgyzstan, the rotating presidency of the organization for 2026–2027 was handed over to Pakistan.
According to official reports, Kyrgyz President Sadyr Japarov handed over the presidency of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization to the Islamic Republic of Pakistan on September 1. With this transfer, Pakistan will chair the Council of Heads of State of the organization for one year.
The 2027 meeting of the Council of Heads of State of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization is also expected to be held in Islamabad, hosted by Pakistan. Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs had previously announced that hosting the summit would be the most important event of Pakistan’s presidency of the organization.
After assuming the presidency, Pakistani Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif said that Pakistan would advance its presidency under the theme “Turning Vision into Action: Connectivity, Innovation and Shared Prosperity.” He also emphasized expanding regional cooperation in the areas of economy, energy, information technology, artificial intelligence, counterterrorism, and crisis management.
In recent years, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization has become one of the most important frameworks for political, security, and economic cooperation in the region. This year’s summit in Bishkek was attended by the leaders of member states, and several documents and agreements covering security, economic, transportation, cultural, and humanitarian cooperation were signed at the conclusion of the summit.
