A new study involving nearly one million adults suggests that people who drink their tea and coffee at very high temperatures may be up to three times more likely to develop a type of esophageal cancer.
Experts recommend waiting a few minutes after preparing tea or coffee to allow the beverage to cool down from an extremely hot temperature. Researchers say repeated exposure to intense heat may damage the tissue of the esophagus.
However, these findings do not establish a definitive cause-and-effect relationship, and researchers say further studies are needed to determine the exact temperature at which the risk becomes significant.
