Maryam Yarmohammadi, a 28-year-old woman and mother of two, died early on Monday, October 5, on Iran’s Qeshm Island after being stabbed multiple times by her brother. Human rights media outlets have reported the incident as a so-called “honour killing,” while Iranian police have described the cause of the incident as a family dispute.

According to published reports, Maryam’s husband had taken their children out of the house before the attack. Some sources have described this action as part of the preparations for the attack. However, her husband’s possible role in the incident has not yet been independently verified.

Reports indicate that Maryam’s brother stabbed her multiple times in various parts of her body, including her neck and breasts. She died from the severity of her injuries after being taken to hospital.

Maryam was from Korgan village in Delfan County, Lorestan Province, Iran. According to reports, she had moved to Qeshm with her husband and two children about two months before the incident. Some reports have also identified her as “Fatemeh Yarmohammadi.”

Some informed sources told media outlets that the killing occurred after Maryam was accused of having an extramarital relationship. However, the exact motive for the killing and the possible involvement of other individuals must be established through the judicial investigation.

Following the incident, some of Maryam’s relatives gathered outside the hospital and protested the suspects’ arrests. According to reports, some of them said they had no complaint and considered Maryam’s death the least punishment she deserved.

Reports differ regarding the suspects’ arrests. Some media outlets have reported that Maryam’s brother and husband were arrested. However, another report states that police officially confirmed the brother’s arrest but did not announce the arrest of anyone else. As a result, the final legal status of Maryam’s husband and his possible role in the incident remain unclear.

The incident has once again highlighted concerns about the killing of women for so-called “honour”-related reasons and domestic violence. Accusations concerning women’s private lives cannot justify violence or depriving them of their right to life. A thorough investigation and clarification of the role of everyone involved are essential to ensuring justice.
