Hossein Mohibi, spokesperson for the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), said on Wednesday, June 3, that the force did not target Kuwait International Airport. His remarks came hours after images showing extensive damage to the airport were widely circulated in the media.

Speaking to Tasnim News Agency, which is affiliated with the IRGC, Mohibi claimed that the damage was caused by a “failure of the U.S. Patriot missile defense systems.” According to him, the systems failed to intercept Iranian missiles, and debris from the interception attempt fell onto the airport’s passenger terminal.

His comments come as the Kuwaiti government, in response to the missile and drone attacks early Wednesday, declared two Iranian diplomats persona non grata and expelled them from the country. Kuwait also summoned Iran’s chargé d’affaires to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The IRGC spokesperson stated: “We did not target Kuwait Airport; the damage was caused by a malfunction and failure of the U.S. Patriot missile defense systems.”
