U.S. President Donald Trump has once again emphasized that Iran must not acquire nuclear weapons and said that Washington currently considers the Strait of Hormuz to be “U.S. territory.”
Speaking in South Carolina, Trump said: “We cannot allow Iran to have a nuclear weapon.” Referring to the Strait of Hormuz, he added: “I consider the Strait of Hormuz U.S. territory right now. It is U.S. territory.”
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most important routes for the transportation of oil and natural gas, and any tensions surrounding the waterway could have significant consequences for regional security and global energy markets.
Trump’s latest remarks come as tensions between the United States and Iran remain high, with Iran’s nuclear program and the status of the Strait of Hormuz among the key points of disagreement between the two countries.
Iranian officials have previously rejected similar claims regarding the Strait of Hormuz and emphasized Iran’s sovereignty and rights over the waterway.
