Officials from the Taliban’s Ministry of Information and Culture have announced the suspension of BBC radio broadcasts across Afghanistan, citing what they describe as “repeated violations” by the broadcaster. The BBC has also confirmed the decision.
Safiullah Raed, head of media monitoring at the Taliban’s Ministry of Information and Culture, announced that BBC radio broadcasts had been suspended across Afghanistan.
Meanwhile, Khabib Ghufran, spokesperson for the ministry, also confirmed the suspension of the broadcaster’s activities, saying the decision was made following what Taliban officials describe as “repeated violations” by the BBC. However, Taliban officials have not provided specific details about the alleged violations.
A BBC spokesperson also confirmed the suspension of the broadcaster’s radio broadcasts across Afghanistan and said the BBC was in contact with Afghan officials to resolve the issue.
The suspension of BBC radio broadcasts represents a new restriction on audiences’ access to the broadcaster’s programmes inside Afghanistan. However, the BBC has stated that its programmes in Dari, Pashto and English continue to be available via shortwave, mediumwave, the internet and satellite.
