Local sources in Kandahar province say that a man from Rigistan district of the province has married off his 17-year-old daughter to a Chinese citizen who is said to have recently converted to Islam.
According to the sources, the marriage took place in exchange for 1.5 million Afghanis and was due to the girl’s family’s economic difficulties.
The sources also say that the Chinese citizen’s father came to Kandahar about eight years ago and embraced Islam five years ago. Based on this information, he initially chose the name “Aftab” for himself, but later changed it to “Muhammad Omar.” It is also said that his son, who has now become the groom of the Kandahari family, is named “Hammad.”
The report comes as poverty and economic difficulties have increased in Afghanistan since the Taliban returned to power, and reports of girls being married off due to families’ financial problems have emerged in recent years.
